Established in 1979 at Trinity College Dublin, the Heraeans promote women’s sports and hospitality, connecting elite sportswomen and celebrating their achievements.
The Heraeans were founded in 1979 by Greta Hickey, Caroline Watson, and Claire Losty, inspired by the Knights of the Campanile and the ancient Greek Heraean Games. Originally formed to host visiting sports teams and champion women’s sports at Trinity College, the Heraeans continue to honour these traditions.
Membership is awarded to individuals excelling in their chosen sports, whether as athletes or organisers, and who embody the sociable spirit required for the group’s hosting duties. Alumnae connections and mentorship are central to the Heraeans’ mission, fostering camaraderie among generations of Trinity sportswomen.
The society represents a proud tradition of inclusivity and excellence, celebrating achievements both on and off the field.
The Heraeans were established by Greta Hickey, Caroline Watson, and Claire Losty, inspired by the ancient Greek Heraean Games. Their mission: to host visiting sports teams and champion women’s sports at Trinity College Dublin.
Provost Linda Doyle’s call for greater gender representation in Trinity’s sporting traditions reignited the Heraeans. With Ciara Mulligan at the helm, the society was reestablished, connecting past and present members.
The Heraeans hosted their first major event since revival alongside the Knights of the Campanile. Discussions about merging with the Knights to create a unified, inclusive organisation began, marking a new era for both societies.
Through hosting, mentorship, and camaraderie, we connect past and present members, inspiring future generations to thrive on and off the field.
